Successful Kick-Off of Fire_cci Phase 2

The Kick-Off meeting for Phase 2 of Fire_cci was held at the University of Alcala, Spain, on 7-8 September 2015, with the attendance of representatives of the Fire_cci project team and the ESA Technical Officer. This new phase of the project will last for a period of 36 months, and will continue and improve the work done in Phase 1.

The new consortium for Phase 2 is organized as follows:

  • Science Leader and Project Manager: University of Alcala (UAH), Spain
  • Earth Observation Science Team: UAH, University of the Basque Country (EHU, Spain), University of Leicester (UL, United Kingdom), University College London (UCL, United Kingdom), School of Agriculture of the University of Lisbon (ISA, Portugal)

  • System Engineers: Brockmann Consult (BC, Germany)

  • Climate Research Group: Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC, Germany), Research Institute for Development (IRD, France), Climate and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (France), Stichting VU-VUmc (VUA, Netherlands)

This second phase of the project will extend the Burned Area time series to cover the period 2000-2016 using the best combination of satellite sensors, including the future Sentinel-3 sensors. It will also incorporate a new development with the generation of a small fire database over Africa, using medium resolution sensors (Sentinels 1&2).
